Andrew Moreno Becoming My Idols

A friend once told me that to find my own personal style as a photographer, I should look to the five photographers I look up to the most. The influence of others, no matter how big or small, will leave an impact on you; you are the culmination of what you look at. In Becoming My Idols, I use the classical technique of copying my “Old Masters” to create a series of self-portraits using each artist’s unique style. In recreating and appropriating the work of my photographic idols I seek to understand their process, what they see, and how they got their final product. In so doing, I question the canon of art history and place myself in the company of my photographic idols, and discover my own personal photographic style.
