Kayla Ward In A Chrysalis

In A Chrysalis is a series of photographs that examines my conflicting feelings about what it means to leave home. I have always held close emotional ties to places of comfort, because of this I find it hard to leave these spaces behind, even though I may need to. As a child I expected this goodbye to holding much less weight, but as it becomes more present, I could only wish to revisit my old beliefs. Consisting of tableaus, personal archival material, and collage, these images represent flickering memories, displaced fragments of domestic space, and my own piecing together of this transition. The act of being stuck, but not wanting to leave the place you feel stuck in, leads to connections of the naive childhood daydream, and how much safer it feels to escape while you physically remain in the same place.
